My friend Zuly just launched her new website for her swimwear line, NAMELESS. I had the honor of modeling one of her creations, Mitstik, in March while I was in Mexico City... and she made me Miss January in her swimsuit calender! You can tell I'm the only Canadian featured 'cause I look ultra pasty. That's fine, I just wish I had some freckles to go along with the white skin. Her ultra fun designs for this season are inspired by los luchadors. I ended up taking three styles home with me, Pequeña Perkings, Dra. K and Dra. Deadline. I LOVE THEM! Now I just need the weather to wear them. Maybe I'll have to return to Mexico...

I was having a nice time with my friend Boobsie on Thursday and the subject of sleaze bags came up. You know the type... greasy appearance, womanizing, narcissistic... and generally creepy. We were discussing their ever increasing presence in "it" culture and how it seems so easy for nasty men to be famous and successful. Their characteristics seem to even elevate them to a level of super-hipster that quite honestly makes my head spin. Quite frankly, it's disgusting...

...and yet fascinating. WHY!? I suppose I have a bit of an affinity for the shocking, abnormal and provocative. Hey, at least it isn't boring, like small talk. So, here they are in all of their self-indulgent glory... the sleaze.

I can imagine he's that guy who is always hanging around with your crew, but no one really likes him that much 'cause he's a pompous asshole, and you only let him chill since he's got all the hookups. This is especially true if you hang out with a bunch of coke heads. Fuck I just want to punch him in the teeth.
Has recently been accused of sexually harassing young models on his shoots, getting away with it until now by exercising his powerful position in the fashion industry.

Things got all exciting on Abbott and Expo this afternoon. LBG got a phone call from his friend informing us that there was a sniper in our building and to look outside. Low and behold, across the street was a chain smoking, shorts clad gent, cornered by about fifteen bomb/riot squad officers with guns pointed at him. The street was blocked off and there were black SUVs lined up down Expo. After a couple of hours dude surrendered. Wonder how he got himself into that situation. I took advantage of my front row seat and sipped my tea on the balcony. It was intense! Better than TV for sure.

Last night I went to the Rio to see a Russ Meyer double feature, starting with Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! proceeded by Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. It was totally worth staying up until four in the morning outside of a bar. One of the many great things about the RIo is that they serve beer. Another is that every time I go something unexpected and completely hilarious happens. My last visit entailed a screening of the film Dancehall Queen (completely rediculous), followed up by a dancehall queen competition in which one of the two contestants managed to strut herself right off the stage. It was enough to induce laugher cramps and tears. Both occasions I took in with my good pal Garzita, who's infectious laugh is enough to make any humorous experience twice as funny. If only I had a recording of his uninhibited chortle to share with you all... I'll work on it. Here are a few selections from both films for your entertainment.

Wowwaweewa! Me gusta Mexico!

El frio me la pela. In other words, me gusta el sol. I don't need to go on about the weather, you already know. I'm one of the only senoritas not wearing pants, I get a lot of looks. No matter, I love my uniform of dresses here in the biggest city on Earth.

I haven't seen one other white girl yet, a few gringos, but no ladies. People on the Metro like to stare, they probably think I'm nuts when I'm traveling alone; They probably think the same when I'm traveling with Marvin because we're always drinking canned Jack Daniels con pop.

So far I've spent the majority of my time exploring downtown on foot, smoking cheap cigarettes, drinking cervecas and eating delicious quesadillas and pastries. Every Mexican I know has warned me that I'm going to get sick, but so far so good. My Spanish is terrible, but everyone is too nice to tell me otherwise (or maybe I just don't understand when they make jokes at my expense). I try to speak to everyone in Spanish and read all of the signs and plaques I can find.

LBG and I have been spending a bit too much time at home lately. Subsequently he wandered off for the evening and left me home by my lonesome (avec la pooch, Lily). It's pouring rain and I'm not about to venture into any shenanigans, so I'm staying put, on my ass. Dog walks don't count as getting out, I still have to pick up shit.

A big flashing warning sign that I need to get of the apartment came sometime this afternoon. LBG and I were smoking on the balcony and somehow came to the conclusion that it would be acceptable to screech out some beloved early 90's house tracks for our neighbor's enjoyment??? How nostalgic.

When I started my blog I promised my friend Bobbi I'd write a post featuring her signature hairstyle, the bowl cut. So this one's for you Boobsie.

Bowl cuts are something I'm sure we're all familiar with. I've had one. It was a result of getting gum stuck in my hair at the age of two. I've also given one. Unfortunately the recipient wasn't so keen on the look and I have never had a chance to trim any locks since... Sorry Harv.

This universal and popular style is most visible among the toddler set, but some of us folk who can legally purchase those sweet Benson and Hedges menthols and Boon's sangria are catching on again. An ode to the bowl cut in all it's forms is in order. Spread the word, and your shears. And find a large basin of course...

Today I received a birthday gift in the mail from my good friend MJ. Some gorgeous leather and lambswool gloves. Along with the gloves came a birthday card (en francais) featuring my childhood pal Barbie. It got me to thinking about my affinity for dolls. It probably stems for my love of fashion, or maybe it's the other way around? No matter, here's some of my favorites.

Blythe is one of my most coveted dolls. The birth of Blythe in 1972 was a humble beginning. After only one year on the market the dolls were pulled off shelves due to low sales. The doll with the colour changing eyes made it's return in 2001 with the production of NeoBlythe. Now Blythe is blowing up across the globe as one of the most popular makeover victims on earth.

While Blythe dolls aren't cheap (especially original 1972 girls), they cost pennies compared to these next beauties. Enchanted Dolls are ball jointed porcelain dolls handmade in Vancouver by doll maker Marina Bychkova. These custom made, one of a kind dolls are probably the most beautiful dolls I have ever seen.

Growing up I was big on paper dolls too. In fact I've slowly been working on my own paper doll book in the past few months. I've still got a long way to go. Here's some new and vintage examples.

I was chillen with my friend Semi yesterday and doing five year old rockstar cool dude things. Somersaults, songs, pancakes, jumping, spinning... all that good stuff. Who knew blogging could be a major pain in the rear? For some reason I'm having some consistency issues with my layout and type. Please, never mind the mess and pretend like this is the prettiest blog you ever saw (and the most interesting)... with Helvetica.
Inspired by the book Gentlemen of Bacongo and a subsequent Googling of the word "dandy", I've decided to dedicate this post to the subject of menswear. Mainly I'll be featuring things I'd like to see on males. No dress length t-shirts, waistbands that skim the hem of your boxers or New Era limited edition, throwback, match my heinous colourway sneaker business. There's a reason what you're about to see is called MENSwear.
I appreciate and stress the importance of originality and personal style. It conveys a lot about the way a person thinks of themselves and the world around them without words. Originality in dress, however, does not stem from acquirement of expensive, one of a kind or limited release goods. Sure, these may be rare or even beautiful, but true originality comes from the way these items are worn on an individual body and how the pieces of an outfit relate to one another, no matter if they're from Goodwill or Harry Rosen.
If you're absolutely hopeless when comes to combining originality and style, go classic. It's the easiest way to fake it.
This leads me to the first topic of this menswear post... basics. I love them on men. Some say all men should own a plain black suit, a pinstripe suit and one in an alternative neutral colour such as grey or navy. I get weak in the knees just thinking of the latter alternatives. Other basics include the plain white t-shirt and dress shirt, jeans or a trench. No matter what the style, the most important consideration is FIT! If you're clothes don't fit you properly...

You're never going to wear them.
You look like an adolescent in your cousin's hand me downs (remember your grade nine class photo?)
Your belly is hanging out of your shrunken shirt and no matter how thin you might be, no one will ever take you seriously as a member of the male population. Ever.

I could rant forever about badly dressed men (remember, I'm from Alberta), but instead I'll just post some nice pictures and links of visually appealing men to get my point across. Based on appearance, I would go for lunch with any of the following. Cute clothes make for cute boys and I like cute boys. Not little ones.

I'm supposed to be getting ready to go meet Aminder, but I'm onto her game and I know that she isn't ready either, so what gives?

I was at ye ol' WEM last night and made a quick stop at one of my favorite Edmonton exclusives (in Western Canada that is), Anthropologie. For some reason this frozen wasteland happens to be home to the monstrosity of a shopping centre that houses stores that would normally be reserved for highly populated, fashion forward, urban centres (so... not Edmonton). It in fact hosts many meganame stores before they pop up in larger, more progressive markets such as my newish found home of Vancouver. Fancy that. Who doesn't love Queen? Maybe you shouldn't be reading this blog if you don't. Or maybe you SHOULD read on and experience their royal highnesses via the wonder of interweb technology. I suggest the latter.

Speaking of technology, my affinity for the BBC declared "Greatest British Rock Band of All Time" began at an early age with the purchase of my first compact disc in grade four - Queen Greatest Hits (1992 American re-release). My personal dance floor/parent's basement would never be the same again. Though I can't deem all of my later soundtracks to be equally as epic, I must say, I started off on the right track.

The big/little ponybro informed me of a new Bohemian Rhapsody cover on YouTube, hence the inspiration for my latest ponylife post...

Isn't that just the most delightfully comforting thing you ever saw?

Freddy Mercury is my ponyteethed hero. SERIOUSLY, how can you not love and own white jeans after seeing Mr. Mercury rock them?

After mentioning that I must of course feature one of my other favorite moments in white denim history. If Freddy can't convince you, maybe another one of my childhood favorites can. In a German dubbed clip (the only one I could find) from one of my favorite scenes in Dirty Dancing, Jennifer Grey sports these casual wonders, proving that she's way too hot to put Baby in the corner.

Speaking of which, currently I'm on a bit of an eyewear kick. Unfortunately I have perfect vision, so I don't have a legit excuse to wear spectacles (damn those healthy eye genes). However, I have just arrived in sunny (and insanely frigid) Alberta. Living in Vancouver for the last two years I had forgotten what winter sun can be like: accident inducing when operating a motor vehicle. In my haste to pack I remembered the low temperature but not the sun's low place in the sky, hence, no sunglasses. I picked up a pair of cheap Oliver Peoples, Riley knock offs, which left me yearning for more. So here's the original version and a few more shades to feast your eyes on and in.

Now I do thanks to LBG (lots of props to him in this post), so now I get to overload on it like everyone else did two years ago. I like her. She makes cool live street perfomance videos with great bands like Bon Iver and has a nice messy bun. I like her.

Okay, awesome. Glad you're here (or there I suppose) reading my first post.

I imagine I should start with a ponypicture, it seems appropriate given the name of this blog. Not to worry, this technological wonder is not dedicated entirely to ponykind, though that subject will rear its sparkling hooves often. This is more of an expression of my affinity for the following items in this non-definitive and even less sequential list:
